I was just a little girl with big dreams. I remember the first time I saw Julie Andrews on the silver screen in the musical The Sound of Music like it was yesterday.
It was a Saturday matinee. The day was special because my mom and I were seeing this exceptional musical together. I was excited. I immediately loved Julie Andrews when I saw her perform as Mary Poppins and I couldn’t wait to see her sing again.
I remember listening to many songs in this musical that Saturday afternoon. The song that stood out for me the most was when Julie Andrews, who played the role of Maria, was in the mountains having a picnic with the Von Trapp children.
Maria began playing her guitar, showing the children how to sing the major musical notes by putting words to each note.
The melody Maria sang was called “Do-Re-Mi.” The children were confused and they told Maria that the words didn’t mean anything. They asked her where they should start and she replied, “let’s start at the beginning, a very good place to start.”
When you write, it can be just as simple. At the beginning of an article: tell a story, set the mood, and develop a relationship with the reader. Taking time to set the tone of an article heightens the interest of your reader and turns up their desire to continue reading the content.
Many writers only see a blank piece of paper or an empty computer screen as they try to gather their thoughts. They don’t know what comes next. This can be frustrating, and time-consuming, especially if you’re attempting to meet a deadline.
See possibilities in your writing and share some life stories. Add the ingredient of imagination and you’ll quickly get your writing off the ground.
Bringing your thoughts to the surface is easier than you may think. Playing calming music helps to center your focus while writing. Piano music can have a powerful result on the making of exceptional writing. Try different kinds of music to inspire your writing.
Reading a great novel or any one of your favorite genres can also have the same effect on you. It has the power to relax the mind by taking you to another place in time.
- Reading something for pleasure, or listening to music you enjoy before getting down to writing, will help boost your creativity.
- Accomplished writers make it their goal to capture the reader’s attention. Getting into that natural writing flow the minute you sit down to release your thoughts can be as easy as taking a few minutes to relax first.
- Shut your eyes and either lie down or sit in a comfortable chair. Begin by concentrating on your breathing. Take several deep cleansing breaths in, and then slowly release each breath to prepare for a writing session.
How do you tune in to your inspired genius?
Goldie Hawn once said,
“Mindfulness can help people of any age. That’s because we become what we think.”
The human mind can easily be overwhelmed with self-doubt. When you listen to someone’s negative judgment of you, your self-doubt can stop you from being at your best. This same scenario works against you when you’re trying to fill up a blank page with your genius. Suddenly your confidence level drops.
Be strong and have the courage to believe in who you can be, and you’ll have a greater chance to become a capable writer. Cultivate your talent and know that your writing’s a gift worth sharing with others.
Leave self-doubt behind, take a leap of faith, and you’ll be on your way to creating a worthy masterpiece!
I’d like to invite you to be part of a weekly challenge: write one paragraph about possibilities for suspending self-judgment and then answer the question of how that could change your outlook for the better.
