THE FIVE-YEAR SNAP
What will your New Year’s business goals do to change your life?
It was the day for setting the annual goals. Abigail had been doing a good job as the director of a shelter for homeless families for the two years the facility had been open, but this year, when they had their annual meeting, she did something different.
She asked everyone to hold up the hand they wrote with, and on the count of five, everyone was to snap their fingers one time. She said they would do it again in five years.
Then, they listened to her five-year goals and added their own. They ended with a pretty clear picture of what each of them had to do each year to make the five-year goal a reality. They made New Year’s resolutions about using their skills for the success of the shelter and its inhabitants. Barney volunteered to be the accountability partner and help each of the other three team members set weekly, monthly, and biannual goals.
His first goal, which he hadn’t mentioned, was to ask her what she meant more often when she said things that confused him. He wanted to be clear on what she assumed he would be doing when he thought she had given a vague idea instead of clear direction. Sometimes, though, when he was looking at her or listening, he couldn’t concentrate. His second goal was to find out if she could see him in anything except a business role. It was his intention to find that out during the next year. When he got into the car, he drove to a park, raised his fist and snapped his fingers one time. He was going to make his own five-year goals.
Clear Communication Makes Effective 5-Year Goal Planning Possible!
I first heard of the five-year snap at a meeting of wealthy Amway business owners. One of the most successful of them had used it to plan the strategies for his very stable multi-million-dollar family business.
He and the two generations of family business owners faithfully gathered every five years at midnight for a group snap. They had discussed the successes and near misses of the previous five years at each of their annual meetings; but at the five-year snap, they put all those things into perspective and then used that information to plan the next five years. Other business owners successfully do similar things.
This kind of forward-moving discussion’s only possible when all the people involved can consult with detachment, lack of judgment and blame, and willingness to accept responsibility for both positive and negative outcomes. Then you can use all the information dispassionately to create something new, using the skills of the people involved.
As you know, focused communication that leads to clear relationships is a major part of the goal-setting in any successful business venture. It’s a key component of the level five — we both win or I don’t participate — mental and emotional processes in the iPEC system of energetic self-perception.
These thoughts, emotions, and actions revolve around the idea that everyone involved must benefit or the main player will not participate at all. The core thoughts of coming together in agreement, understanding more than one point of view, and suspending good/bad judgment require clear-thinking and using unambiguous language. The main emotion’s one of peace. These people generate calmness and harmony. Their intention’s to accept differences between people instead of changing those people into something else, and to find opportunity in every situation instead of discovering problems. Their relationships are firmer because people know where they stand and can contribute their own unique talents without competing for attention. Level five entrepreneurs don’t stumble over their words because they can speak without confusion between their thoughts and their emotions.

What’s said – “Let’s look at what we can each bring to the table so we can use all our strengths to create more profit.”
Thought – “This situation will help us see who we really are.”
What’s said – “I can see each of your points of view. Now, what do you see?”
Thought – “Whatever is here right now is perfect right now.”
What’s said – “We have everything we need, therefore we can create whatever we want.”
